Municipal waste water treatment facilities face tough challenges in dealing with the unpredictable nature of wastewater from populated regions. Omya Optical® provides for an efficient and stable activated sludge treatment operation thereby ensuring a clear (low turbid) overflow, stable flocs (improve settling), consistent sludge extraction and improved dewatering.
Naturally enhanced Activated Sludge Process
Omya Optical® supports the role microorganisms have in the activated sludge process to convert dissolved and particulate organic matter (measured as biochemical oxygen demand, BOD), into cell mass.
Omya Optical® improves the formation of flocs in the activated sludge process and provides for better floc settling, improved sludge index and sludge blanket as well as improved sludge dewatering properties.
Omya Optical® enhances the growth of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria thereby also reducing the risk of filamentous bacteria growth (foaming sludge).
Biological and chemical reactions affect the pH and where Omya Optical® establishes a stable pH usually between 7.0 – 8.5 as well as providing for the required buffer capacity to avoid drastic pH changes consequently allowing for a stable microorganism growth and survival.

Industrial Waste Water
Industrial waste water presents unique challenges to the cleanliness of natural waterways. Not only must the water itself be treated to a standard that will pose no environmental risk, but the chemicals and processes used to treat it must also be environmentally neutral and sustainable.
Omya Neutrasorb is a very efficient acid neutralizing non-hazardous, natural fine grinded Calcium Carbonate. It is used in industrial neutralizing applications to replace caustic or lime. It does not form scales an d reduces maintenance costs.
Efficient Neutralization of Industrial Waste Water
Often industrial waste waters are acidic coming with a pH of 2 – 5. Neutralization is therefore an important process step required before other downstream water treatment processes. For biological processes to run stable and efficient the pH after neutralization should be ideally between 6.0 – 8.5.
